The Great Stellastarr* Forum Mix Tape Swap

I thinking a slightly more legal and possibly more interesting alternative to all the mp3 swapping would be a mix tape/cd exchange thing.
Basically, anyone who's interested, put your name down. When we get a decent number of people I'll couple everyone totally at random. Then you exchange details and send each other a mix cd.
In theory you'll discover some good new music and get to influence someone else's music taste.
(this will either be a big success or fail miserably...)

Here's my review (bear with me if it's too long for some of you) :
1. The Hives - Two-Timing Touch And Broken Bones
Ehh...The Hives are alright. I've never heard their stuff before and I guess I was expecting more because I've heard the name thrown about a lot. Song's OK. At least I like the drums and bass line.

2. Stars - Romantic Comedy
I really liked this one. It was a crazy transition from the first song, but I can deal with that cause it's a cool song. :) I love the male/female duo. She has a great voice.

3. George Clinton - Paradigm
LOVE! Love....can I say it again? L-O-V-E. This is great. He has the sexiest voice...O_O It's a bit odd, but it sort of grabs me and I can't not like it. Very "groovy"...haha. <3

4. Sorry About Dresdon - One Version Of Events
Erm....sorry, Dresdon....but I didn't really like this. The vocals are annoying to me. Crazy mouth. Can't understand what he's saying. A bit whiny. Not my thing.

5. The Flaming Lips - The Spark
I love anything these blokes do. Glad to have another song to add to my iTunes, as I haven't bought an entire album yet. Don't know what's keeping me (other than the fact that I have almost no money). Only makes me love them more. The crazy layers to their music are wicked fun. Plus they're great story-tellers.

6. The Dandy Warhols - Scientist
Ha. I've only heard one of their other songs and now I really want an album. Makes me want to dance....if I could dance, that is. Yet another band with sexy voices. They had me at "Woo!".

7. Rilo Kiley - Jenny, You're Barely Alive
Well...I've heard the band name ALL over the place and I wasn't terribly won over. I might like some of their other songs, but this doesn't get good 'til the very end, in my opinion. And that's not a bonus. I don't just listen to songs for the endings.

8. Muse - Hysteria
Well, the music itself is good, but....not really special. I think I tried to like them before, but none of it stuck. I can't even remember what I tried to listen to. I do like it. But only a weak like.

9. Cursive - Nonsense
Interesting song. First thought being...."WTF is this?". It's very repetitive, but I kind of like it. Not sure that I'll look for any more of their stuff. Didn't really motivate me to.

10. Arctic Monkeys - On The Run From The MI-5
Just bought their album, which I'm really pleased with. Not sure that this particular song does a bunch for me, though. It's a really quiet recording too...maybe that's it. I do like them a lot, though.

11. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Suck My Kiss
Well. I never really got into them. I like the songs that have been played and beaten to death repeatedly on the radio over the years, but I didn't like this song too much. *shrug*

12. The Darkness - Is It Just Me?
Had "...Thing Called Love" in my head after listening to this. Definitely not my favorite. I don't really dig Justin Hawkins voice, either.

13. Prince - Illusion, Coma, Pimp, & Circumstance
Not a Prince fan. Enough said.

14. Dinosaur Jr. - Start Choppin'
Umm...started out OK. 'Til he started to sing. Voice grates a bit...and not in a good way.

15. They Might Be Giants - They Got Lost
I was really hoping I'd like these guys. I've heard so much about them. 'Twas a bit anti-climactic. I'm going to check out more stuff, though cause I still want to give them the benefit of the doubt. I do love pianos, though. :)

16. Koufax - Why Bother At All
Ouch, feedback. Really cool, though. I like the music as well as the vox. Which is a big plus so far. Definitely motivated to find some more. Yay for pianos. :D

17. The Fiery Furnaces - Chris Michaels
Um. Weird as ****. Not really liking it.

18. Prince - Fury
Nope. Still not a fan.

19. Alkaline Trio - Time To Waste
Crazy transition from the piano at the beginning to the guitar. It's alright. The vox sound like loads of other bands, so I wasn't too impressed.

20. Paul Anka - Smells Like Teen Spirit
Haha. Priceless. Jazz version of Nirvana. Actually sounds pretty cool with that style.

Sorry I kind of ripped some of them up, but it's just my honest opinion. No intentional offense. Got a few new artists that I'll check out later, though. Thanks a bunch! :D

time for my massive review of Dickens' massive two-cd mixtape

Acceptance- Different- this is just a pretty song. i like the vocals, the piano, and the strings at the beginning (and throughout for that matter). Idk if i'd rush out to get the album but theres nothing bad here. just some good music.

Aqualung- Good Times Gonna Come- I like the vocal effects here. i haven't heard anything else by them. more piano-y goodness.

Belle & Sebastian- If You Find Yourself Caught In Love- I'm sorta suprised I don't have any B&S cause i've heard tons about them, heard iTunes samples, and liked it, but never got around to actually buying anything. I love the lovliness of this song and the piano and vocals and even the tamborine!

Ben Folds- There's Always Someone Cooler Than You- I seriously <3 this song. Folds at his lyrical best. I think he might be playing the bass line on the lowest piano keys now that i'm really listening to it. But seriously, this is one of my top 5 all time BF songs.

Ben Kweller- How It Should Be (Sha Sha)- I've only recently actually had Ben Kweller to listen to myself, instead of just hear about. a fun little relaxing piano song with a sweet little groove.

Ben Lee- Gamble Everything On Love- I like this guy's voice. The lyrics are very forward at the beginning which works well. another little groovy song that makes me want to buy The Bens EP (ben folds, kweller, and lee)

Bic Runga- Listening For The Weather- niceeeeeee vocals. just a wonderful melody. both the vocals and music sound a little Rilo Kiley-ish sometimes(except for the harmonica). but the star here is totally the vocalist, great tone, great range, great attitude. Jenny Lewis best watch her back.

Brendan Benson- Tiny Spark- I like the opening line. a nice piano-driven beat too. besides for that, idk, something doesn't quite seem right. i'm not so sure about the vocals. hmm, sometimes i just randomly don't like music for no reason at all.

David Bowie- Golden Years- What can i say? its bowie. I've never really liked him to be honest but this song isn't too bad.

David Grey- Please Forgive Me-hmm. not so sure about this one. i don't really like the singing. i do like the beat and the paino is not bad

The Delays- Lost In A Melody- big, fun, busy sound. me likey. something very 80's both in the synths and the vocalist's occasional resemblance of Michael Jackson(cerca Watchin' Me). 80's weren't too bad.

Denison Witmer- Little Flowers- if i didn't know better, id say it might be Sufjan himself. its stripped down, but not in the way i usually like. sounds good, but just not my cuppa tea.

Discover America- 1986- another song about some past year. not bad, doesn't really grab me.

The Flaming Lips- Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots, Pt. 1- HOLY ****. The Flaming Lips are just amazingnessocity. I'm so glad i just got this from my sister( though haven't actually listened to it yet) . these guys just rock my socks 3 times since thursday. that makes no sence, but if they wrote a song about it, it'd be pure happiness. the first line alone sums it up. Her name is Yoshimi, she's a black belt in karate (hey hey) http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=141 i think says a lot about them. best indie rock couplet ever.

Guster- Careful- These guys sound pretty solid. good singing and playing. not best band ever but mighty good.

The High Speed Scene- The I Roc Z Song- you know its good if it mentions marching band and a farmer’s tan in one line. i like it, not as much as possible, but i don’t dislike it.

Hot Hot Heat- Goodnight Goodnight- I’ve heard about these guys but seem to remember not liking them from listening to samples. I do like this song, though. hard to say why... probably the chord structure.

James Blunt- Wiseman- I don’t like James Blunt. I just don’t. I don’t like him and i didn’t like Jack Johnson when he was the flavor of the month. At least this song is better than Your Beautiful.

Keane- This Is The Last Time- I’ve heard a lot about this band too. I’m not terribly impressed but its catchy and has a nice piano beat.

KT Tunstall- Suddenly I See- I like the vocals and guitar on this song. Its a fun one.

The Long Winters- Blue Diamonds- sounds more like an organ than a piano here. Sounds for a long time that its like an intro to a bigger chorus. Then I sort of got used to its style which is more of a vocal-forward lyrics song. The guitar work is well-done, though.

Louis XIV- Finding Out True Love Is Blind (EP Version)- I’ve heard of these guys before and rememeber liking the samples. I like the song here definatly, the driving drum beat keeps things moving and the singer has plenty of attitude.

Mae- Embers And Envelopes- When I first got into stelaastarr*, i looked around at the listeners also bought page for them on iTunes and Mae was there for a bit. I like this song except for the vocals, they just seem almost a bit emo for my taste. They’re better on the chorus.

Maximo Park- The Coast Is Always Changing- I don’t know why I haven’t gone out and gotten a Maximo Park cd yet because i’ve liked what I’ve heard of them, especially on this song. To be more specific, I like the guitar-vocal interplay and vocalist.

Nada Surf- Inside Of Love- In general, I tend not to like spaceyish guitar songs like this.

OK Go- What To Do- Vocal forward at the beginning going into a harmony with a basic background guitar part works pretty good for my taste

The Rocket Summer- Never Knew- Very easily could be Ben Folds on the piano at the beginnning. don’t like the vocals, though.

The Shins- New Slang- The Shins are pretty awesome. This isn’t my favorite song by them but its up there definatly. Better lyrics than most of the world for sure.

Sigur Ros- Staralfur- Man, I’ve heard tons about this band without ever haveing knowingly heard them. This song sounds very familiar, though. I’m not sure of the Coldplay comparisons, but this is beautiful music.

Sleeping At Last- All That Is Beautiful- I like it. Good feel and a good drum part with nice guitars, too.

Snow Patrol- Crazy In Love- Heard all about Snow Patrol but only had one song. I really like this on. A bit darker and heavy than other songs on the disks. I love the rapping part in the middle.

Sufjan Stevens- Chicago- this has to be one of my favorite Sufjan songs that i’ve heard. Good melodies.

Thirteen Senses- Do No Wrong- piano intro + muffled drums + coldplayish vocals + some spacey backwards guitar work = meh. its good, but i’m not it’s biggest fan.

Touriste- Your Move- I like this song more than the sort f similar other songs on the cds. idk why.

Travis- Driftwood- Again, it sorta blends in with many of the other songs.

The Zutons- Pressure Point- This is just a cool track. I like it. pressure pressure pressure pressure pressure.
